Repair Garbage Disposal Hum

My garbage disposal stopped turning. It was just making a faint humming sound.

To fix it, I took a 1/4" allen wrench and inserted it into the hole at the bottom of the unit (under the sink). I turned the wrench (either direction). It was hard to turn at first, then easy. It seems to have either unstuck the turning mechanism, or cleared whatever was stuck in there.

Now it is working fine.

Well, that repair seems easy enough! A friendly advice, though - I would suggest you to turn off the power of your disposal and make sure to close the water tank before doing anything with it next time. Also, you could have used some oil when you turned the wrench to make it easier. A nut or valve may lose its thread if turned with force in the wrong direction.

You’ve got an easy repair here, Mike! But like what Brandon said, it’s a must that you turn off the power to your garbage disposal and close the water tank to avoid further mess. It’s for your own sake, and I guess you need to use tools next time. I know the repairs can be done with bare hands, but safety counts more than the convenience in your garbage disposal. :)
