Reconciling a Tragedy

Thinking about a tragedy like Hurricane Katrina, or a school shooting, it would seem reasonable to conclude that one of the following is true:

a) God made the event happen for a good reason that he has not revealed to us
b) God made the event happen because he is evil
c) The event happened randomly and God chose not to prevent it from happening
d) The event happened randomly and God was unable to prevent it from happening
e) The event happened randomly with no involvement from God

So, here are two questions to think about:
1. Forgetting whatever you might have been told, which of the above do you think is the most likely to be the truth?
2. If you had to put faith in one of the above, which would be the most comforting on a daily basis?

I think most Americans would answer (a) to both questions. Maybe some would go with (c), which is similar. The impression that I get from most people that I talk to is that at some level they think (e) is the most likely but they still choose to go with (a). It seems surprising to me sometimes, given so many examples of bad things happening to good people, that more people wouldn't prefer to take their chances with (e), as compared to (a).
